Characters Backstory:
Gunko Artorius is quite the free spirit, a Turian born in 2167. She lived a relatively normal life, both of her parents have served in the military, her mother being a part of an Emergency Ordinance Disposal (EOD) squad while her father was a First Lieutenant EOD squad leader. As a child, Gunko wasn’t exactly the smartest girl in the classroom; she barely passed her math classes and had a hard time with strategic problems in her Military Tactics courses. It didn’t stop her from attempting to answer questions for the class when the teacher called out her name (though nine times out of ten it would be the wrong answer). Gunko frequently required an after-school tutor to help her with learning things, even when she took rather flawless notes in class. Because she had a hard time in school, followed by the fact that she was smaller than most Turians, some of the other less-friendly students of her school began to pick on her.

They called her a few different names throughout her childhood, ranging from insults like “short” and “stupid,” even going so far as calling her “human” (because turians still hold a negative bias towards human at this point in time). The racial slurs and the jabs at her height didn’t bother her much after a few weeks, but it was always the word “stupid” that hit her the hardest. Usually she would be very energetic and passionate over just about anything, but when someone called her stupid, well, outwardly she would brush it off with a laugh and a joke! … But inside, she’d gradually lose her motivation for the day, and before too long she’d fall pretty silent. At school and out of the house she was always active and positive, but at home the comments got to her. The depressive states she fell into would last quite a long time, and even further affected her schoolwork. She knew she wasn’t the smartest, and she tried really hard to do better! And boy was it hard, it really hurt, but she didn’t give up, she never did. When it came down to it she always pushed ahead towards the future.

If there was ever one thing she was truly passionate about, it was her future conscription into the Turian military. Most turian children expected to be conscripted at the age of fifteen, and Gunko was especially excited. When she turned fifteen in 2182, she willingly came along with the recruiter once her time came, thrusting herself into boot camp like a giddy child who just bought a new video game (which technically wasn’t far off from Gunko herself, as she was a literal giddy child). Despite the drill instructor attempting to humiliate her by yelling about how she was “the shortest sack of shit in the entire base,” Gunko shrugged it off and did as told. During training, she did rather well during physical training, until it came up to sparring and melee combat initially. Instead of trying to fight traditionally, the instructors taught her instead to be quick on her toes and aim primarily for weak points on an enemy combatant when engaged in CQC. She was able to take down some of the bigger recruits that she went up against in sparring, although it was an occasional event. During weapons training, she found herself more proficient with submachine guns in CQC areas.

Unfortunately for Gunko, the problem she had the most was with the academic portion of the training. While the physical portions were right up her ally, and in combat scenarios there were times where Gunko even found herself being rather decent at thinking on her feet, when it came to the standard affair things went downhill fast. Her school days would repeat themselves, and Gunko would find herself struggling on exams and with strategic exercises. Attempts at teaching her proper tactics generally failed, or at least took far longer than normal. After many commands to charge straight into enemy lines or sometimes off of cliffs to get ‘a surprise attack,’ her peers began to once again pick on her for it.

“Idiotic,” “Stupid,” “Suicidal,” etc, comments came her way about that brand of “tactics” that she brought to the table. After many attempts at changing up what was considered normal for her (and therefore incorrect), or “innovating” some new strategies, it all ended up boiling down to an incident in which her drill instructor blew up on her. Some sort of idiot, that’s what she was.

By this point Gunko saw herself as such, but hearing it spouted in her face was never pleasant. She continued her service until its end, struggling to improve her academics and plowing ahead into what she excelled at, living out the contract until it expired. But after that she split. Hearing all your peers calling you an idiot gets rather tiring after all, and with other options in the galaxy she had other things she could charge headfirst into. The blue suns became that second option.

She worked with the Blue Suns for roughly a year, working her way into the ranks and taking part in many a mission. Their exploits took them from one side of the galaxy to the other, fighting individuals of all kinds, including a particular run in with the Blood Pack. During a shootout with a Krogan an ally was injured, and in a vengeful rush of adrenaline Gunko, (and some of her squad mates) managed to charge in and take the fellow out, with Gunko taking his Executioner for the trouble. All things said, her new career was looking pretty good.

However, things were shaken when the reapers attacked. Gunko’s squad was stationed in an area under attack, and a rapid evacuation ensued. The suns began grabbing their things and rushing to the ship, fighting off geth as they went, gathering supplies and moving as fast as they could to make it out alive. Gunko was the nearest to their vault, ordered to grab their remaining credits and supplies before her evacuation.

Now, Gunko is a kind soul. Perhaps too kind, in her rush to the vault she was stopped in her tracks. Some of her fellow Blue Suns members, two Humans, a Turian, and even a Batarian, were pinned in a closed off room, unable to escape. She had a choice, and in the moment she did what she felt was right. Gunko rushed to to their aid, pulling them from the wreckage and taking down several Geth in the process. She sent them away towards the escape ships. But by the time she was done, rushing towards the vault, an explosion completely obliterated whatever was left.

Gunko’s return was quick and filled with frustration, but at least she knew she saved her comrades…. Unfortunately her efforts were not well received. Her team was very upset with her, the squad lost half of their resources, and the Suns lost a sizable chunk of their income in the process. Her squadmates were saved but her reputation went down the drain. And as salt in the wound the ones she saved didn’t seem very greatful, or in the least didn’t want to seem so in front of their very angry superiors. She was scolded, and of course once more, her superiors took her aside and asked, “What the fuck were you thinking? Are you fucking stupid?!”

Haha, she guessed so! But even with the comment on her intelligence being something she believed.. She still didn’t feel like it was right. She saved lives, four of them! Wasn’t that worth it? Were four lives really worth less than a few million credits? If that’s really how things worked in the Blue Suns… even if she was stupid, that wasn’t the kind of smart she wanted to be a part of. She left the Suns, dejected, but steadfast in her beliefs.

A few weeks later she was approached by rather dashing man in a suit, working his charm on the young soldier. “I heard about your little incident!” He said, “I think you made the right choice!” He said.

“Tell ya what, intelligence doesn’t matter here, you’re good with a gun and even better with your fists. We give you a target and you shoot at it, that’s all you need. May even save some lives, every now and then. You want in?”

What music to Gunko’s ears, and so soon after her unemployment too! She signed up to New Eden almost immediately, geared up and ready to roll on into service. Shooting bad guys and saving lives? That is absolutely her BAG. Like a dream come true. Even if unbeknownst to her... it may not have been entirely accurate. Still, nonetheless Gunko is rearing to go, ready to join the ranks of New Eden and start her new life.

What is your characters goal aboard the ship? Why were they hired by New Eden?: She was approached and smooth-talked into joining the crew as CQC, she's here to follow her passion and try to do something good for others with her life, however misguided it may be to join a mercenary group for such a cause.
