Lights. That was the first thing that the small mind belonging to the very young asari could comprehend. So many pretty lights - so many flashes. Ringing sounds. Boy, this was sure a lot to take in for just being capable of realization within the universe. Whenever she would see one of those bright flashes, or hear the sounds of ringing, a great warmth would wash over her, like the universe was consciously wrapping her in a light, protective embrace. She accepted the embrace, reaching out at the lights every now and then. Where was her mother? That tiny, confused brain was sure that she had a mother. Where else would she have come from?

Oop, up we go. She took into realization that she was no longer where she had once laid, instead being carried. Is that mom, or someone else? Oh, that's not mom. She wondered where she was, but laid complacent for now. She missed the warmth. She twitched slightly, startled as whomever was carrying her made some kind of noise, and before she knew it, she was back lying down again. She didn't appear to have hit the ground hard, she was at least capable to realize, but even though she was put back down, she still couldn't see the lights or the flashes. Or feel the warmth.

Oh, there's mother! Her hands near immediately shop up towards the figure that she saw approaching her, the blue-tinted woman named her mother reaching down, grabbing hold of her sides underneath her arms, before being hoisted upwards. Yay, back to normal! Oh, this isn't how you're supposed to carry a baby. The young asari felt herself pressed into her mother's chest and shoulder, and could see everything wooshing by so fast on either side of her. Sometimes, she would see people behind them down the way they had came, but they would only appear for a small bit before going away again. How odd.

Why did we stop? Viarita lifted her head up from having it rested on her mom's shoulder to look up at her for a moment. She studied her features; blue hued skin, purple lips, a funny head. Wait, did she have that, too? That'd be really funny. She then found her eyes, and saw them staring at something behind Viarita. She swiveled her body around, twisting in her mother's arm, to see what lay behind her. It was - uhm... She thought it was a man? Either that, or a very weird looking mom. She could see him making noises, and throwing his hands around, and pointing at a big thing with circles on the back over and over again.

Finally, after enough of the man-mom thing throwing its hands around enough, they began moving again. Oh, more flashes! She peered back over her mom's shoulder to see more people again, her mother moving away from them quickly towards the big box thing. She twisted back around to look at it again, and saw man-mom standing at the side of it, standing next to a part of the box that had fallen down. She wondered what was inside the box - usually, whenever her mom gave her boxes, there were presents inside!

She was disappointed to find out there were no presents, but there was a very big and comfy chair that she got to sit in. She reached her hands down to grab and pull at her toes, her big, blue eyes following the man and her mother as they moved throughout the ship, sometimes pointing their hands or things out the way they had came into the box. Finally, they all sat back down, and she was placed into the lap of the man-mom. She made a little fuss about that, and twisted her head this way and that to try and find where her mother was, but couldn't see anything. Her lower lip puffed out at the absence of her mother, and she was prepared to start balling for her, but was silenced before even starting by a very loud ringing sound.

The seat she was in - or, the lap she was in - gave her a very odd view in front of her. It was an enormous black expanse, with dots here and there all over it. She could see other boxes with circles on the backs around the white things as well, moving faster than the dots could. After a few more moments of that, an arm coming down to hold her against man-mom whenever her chair would shake really hard. The- oh, wow! Pretty! Suddenly, the view she had changed from dull and without color, to absolutely full of it! Lights, colors, bright things everywhere!

She didn't have long to observe the pretty display before her, being lifted up off of the man-mom's legs, and carried to the back of the box rather quickly. Viarita got a better look of the place, when being carried back - flashing lights, pretty pieces of slab that you could see through, and a few extra chairs. Her eyes landed on what she was being carried to after nearly reaching it: her mother, sitting down against a wall. She couldn't help but let her lips break into a smile at seeing her! A happy giggle escaped her, even more-so when she was sat down beside her mom, the man sitting down on her other side. They both made noises at each other for a bit longer, the only words she understood being 'no' from the man. He said that a lot, right then.

She leaned forward, her eyes focusing on a few dots her mom had on her leg. What's that? Her first instinct was to reach forward towards it, and try to poke it. This resulted in the man pushing her hand away from it, causing her to let out a defiant fuss. She wanted to see what it was! Viarita heard a few more 'no's again, this time directed at her from the man. She started to reach that point of balling again, reaching her arms up and towards her mother, waiting for her to pick her up and sit her in her lap. In-... Instead, her mother's hand only reached down, and laid on the side of her face, her thumb stroking over her cheek slowly. The young asari sat there quietly, looking up at her mother, and before she knew it, listened to her speak her last words:

"I love you. Listen-... Listen to Kannis. He-He'll treat you well, beh-... Better than I ever cuh-could."

She heard the man repeat 'no' a lot more times. He liked saying that a lot, she guessed. What was mom doing that he didn't like her doing? Did he not like her touching her? It was really confusing. She dropped her arms down as she began to become content with the comforting sensation of her mother's hand. Oop, she did the same. Her hand had slowly fallen from her face, and dropped down beside her. She realized that mom had really wide eyes now. The man was saying no again, but a lot louder. Him shouting so much started to make her ball again, throwing her arms up for her mother.

But her mother didn't look at her. She didn't even really move. Being ignored by her mother, and the man shouting just made her crying last longer, and grow louder. That seemed to last for a very long time, the man holding onto her mother, shaking her sometimes, even crying too. After long enough, she had gotten tired enough to stop her crying and slouch forward, lying against her mother's leg. She wasn't resisting her, so maybe she wasn't being ignored! With that comforting thought, she slowly began to drift off to sleep, ignoring the mom-man. Ignoring Kannis, trying to wake up Viarita's mother, Yaate, from her deep slumber of death.

Many years later:

Viarita swung her legs, looking over the edge of the building she sat on down to the world below. She still wondered what it would be like, to jump off. What would happen? Would she fall into space, or maybe the gravity would throw her back into some part of the Citadel? The sound of Kannis calling for her interrupted her thoughts, twisting her body over to look past her shoulder. She saw the turian waving his arm at her, a signal for her to 'come on already'.

The asari let out a little, agitated sigh, but hoisted herself up anyways. She turned around, and walked away from the edge of the building towards her father-figure. He dropped his arm down as he saw her coming closer, retreating back from the balcony and into the apartment complex they owned. Or, he owned. She was just one roof over, nearly level with the balcony. There was a small gap between the roof and their room, so she had an easy time getting back over, jumping down past the railing and in front of the glass doors and windows.

She slid one open, and made her way inside, noting the turian sitting at a table near another set of tall windows, holding up a paper in front of his old-written face. "What is it?" She asked; about what he wanted, and what the note was, gesturing to it with her right hand to make that clear. He raised his head up from it, noticing that she had returned. A small, fragile smile broke over his lips, before a shuddering sigh escaped him. He set it down on the table, and pushed it over until it was on the side of the glass surface that Viarita stood before. His eyes raised from it, and met hers - she could see his face smiling, but his eyes said something different.

"You got accepted." He didn't elaborate on what he meant, but Viarita didn't need him to. Her face immediately contorted into one of joy, rushing forward and past the table to wrap him up into a big, blue filled hug. Several exclamations of, "Yes! Yes!", escaped her lips, planting several tiny smooches onto the side of the turian's face, what she considered to be his cheeks. She reached down, picking up the paper lying on the table, and skimmed it quickly.

Sent fr- blah, blah, blah.
We here by accept your application. We have great faith that the teachings from your guardian has trained you well, and that you are well informed on the way the guard runs around h- ohmygosh, ohmygosh.
She didn't even bother to read the rest, throwing the paper down onto the table again to reach down and give her fathe- Kannis, another big hug, resulting in a few light chuckles from the old turian. "Alright, alright. Don't make my shoulder pop out again." After that warning, she released him, joy still beaming through her blue-hued face.

"Kannis, I can finally get on the road to actually being something! I can be some kind of... Some kind of war hero, like all those humans, turians, and asari I've heard about!" She was ecstatic! She couldn't help herself before she had jumped over and into a spot in the room where she had more free space, and did a quick little jig. The turian watched silently, his face showing happiness, but his eyes and silence betrayed him. Viarita slowly began to realize this, stopping her dancing, and focusing her attention on him again. As if to try and mask his hidden sorrow further, his smile widened.

"Kannis? What is it- what's wrong?" Her hands hovered together over her stomach, holding onto each other's fingers. Kannis remained silent for just a moment longer, before casting his gaze out the windows. He let out a slow, withered sigh. "Via', the Citadel isn't always the perfect place to live in. Being apart of security will show you that." His gaze traded the glass for the asari again, giving her another faint, sad smile. "I'm only afraid for you. I mean-" he was interrupted by a light chuckle, his sad smile being replaced with a more genuine one for just a moment, "-I know how capable you are. I'm the one who taught you all you know, after all."

Viarita stood still for a moment, trying to find the words. She had told him time and time again that she would be fine, but now that she was actually accepted, she had that funny feeling that you would get whenever you got... Nervous, or anxious, o- butterflies, that's what it was called. She walked back around the table and towards her old fath- friend, reaching behind her to grab hold of a chair and pull it up closer, before sitting down in it. Before long, her hands found his, and they were both pulled into her lap. She squeezed them lightly in an attempt to reassure him, and he squeezed back, giving her another small smile. They sat like that for a long while, before they had retreated to bed. That night, Viarita swore she had a nightmare - even though Kannis knew she hadn't had one in ages - and had to sleep in Kannis' bed to feel safer.

A few years later:

Viarita looked down at the hospital bed quietly. She watched her sleeping fath- frien-... Father, lie in bed. She watched his heart rate slow, and speed back up, many times. His heart was slowly weakening with his old age. And, here she was, the maiden ready for adventure. A small part of her wanted to stay, to make sure that Kannis would pass peacefully, with her at his side, but she had been informed that he didn't want her to watch him die by one of his friends in security. He had told her about a few days after she had finally been accepted into the military, after having been with the security for the Citadel long enough, and had been granted permission to board the ship known as "New Eden."

It excited her to no ends, almost making her forget where she was as she got lost in day dreams, and thoughts of being in battle. Her views of what she had wanted to do had changed over time, instead having learned quite a deal of medical abilities, instead of combat-based skills. A quiet cough sprung her out of her mind immediately, her eyes re-focusing on Kannis. His eyes opened up weakly, those eyes that she had come to know so well slowly drawing up to look to her. His old, fragile lips cracked into a small, faint smile at seeing her. "Took you long enough to get here," he croaked.

She had to keep herself from bursting into tears, right then and there, as he spoke. She could practically hear how close to death he was. "I'm sorry, Kannis. I- I didn't know it had gotten this bad. I wo-ould've kept tabs on you more, if I had just..." That time, her eyes really did begin to well up. They calmed down, though, once she felt a delicate, calm hand placed upon hers. She didn't even need to look to know whose it was. She took a deep breath, before letting out in a slow, calming exhale, the old turian watching her silently.

"Don't say sorry. I knew that this would happen, and so did you." His hand squeezed hers softly. "I wanted you to follow what you wanted, not to stay stuck in an apartment with me for the rest of your life. I want you to explore, to save worlds, galaxies - people. I know that you will." His fingers clamped around her hand as tight as a tired, weak old man could, her hand turning over underneath his to reaching her own fingers around his palm, and hold onto it as well. This time, for real, the flood gates broke. Her eyes welled up, salty tears rolling down over her blue cheeks, murmuring a quiet, "I'm sorry. I love you, d-dad."

Kannis gave her one last, weak smile, and repeated the phrase in that hoarse, withered voice of his, once so powerful and booming: "I love you, too, Via'." They stayed like that, holding onto each other's hands silently, before she had to be ushered out. She had to be somewhere, anyways. He wanted her to be there, so she was going to do all in her power to. She called back that she'd keep in touch as much as possible into the room, before making her way off.

Four hours later:

Viarita shouldered the duffle bag she had been toting around to the location of the transport ship she was to board. She looked at the attending crew mates sitting on the landing paid, waiting for the new recruit to arrive. One of them, a female turian, gave her a friendly smile, ushering her over. She stood up as Viarita made her way over, holding a clip board in her hands. "Welcome to the crew, T'rana. Happy to have you with us." She returned the smile, giving her an appreciative nod. "Thank you, I'm delighted to be with all of you." The turian nodded, before gesturing towards the entrance of the shuttle, the other crew members already making their way into the bay.

"Shall we?" The turian asked, beginning to make her way over. Viarita hefted the bag on her shoulder further before following along behind her.

"Definitely."

What is your characters goal aboard the ship? Why were they hired by New Eden? :
Viarita's goal is to save as many people as possible, and to be a grand addition to the crew. She desires to explore and expand her knowledge, as well, due to her uprising away from true asari culture causing her to be rather dull in matters concerning her heritage. One of her child-like desires, implanted to her head by her father figure, Kannis, was to become a great war hero, and to save planets and - maybe - the entire universe. This has been numbed down by a very large factor, but day-dreaming about it still comes common to the asari.

She was hired by the New Eden due to her record in the security guard for the Citadel, her medical capabilities, and her combat experience.

Yeah, that caught my eye, too. All Asari are born biotically capable.

And are capable of choosing whether they don't want to - or not being taught - how to use them. By "no natural," I mean she has no skill in using them. She's born with it, but isn't really capable of using it.

Yeah, see I thought you were attempting to get an Asari who couldn't Biotic. Some Asari can choose not to Biotic, so yeah - all good.

Not even going to read that backstory.

"No natural biotics" pretty sure this means her asari didn't really take after biotics just like a lot of asari do.
